When exercising in cold conditions the skin is cold and dry, making it harder to clearly detect the ECG heart rate signal. Conductive Gel is designed to boost that signal to the heart rate monitor.

The gel boosts the signal amplitude of your ECG heart signal to the monitor, allowing for a clear and loud signal to be received. The result = Better heart rate BPM accuracy in all conditions.
The gel creates a thin layer of conductive film across the electrodes that increases the clarity of the ECG signal to the heart rate monitor.

The electrode gel also reduces skin irritation sometimes caused by wearing the chest transmitter strap too tightly and for very long periods of time. The gel acts as a barrier between the electrode sensors and your skin with a moisturising agent, preventing skin irritation. Ideal for ultra long running and cycling events. 
 
Is Electrode Gel Better Than Water?
Electrode gel is designed to be absorbed by your skin like moisturiser and form a thin film across the strap electrodes. The gel has far greater longevity than water (sweat) that will evaporate and run clear with time.
